Nijo Castle: The Nightingale Floors, Ninomaru Palace, and Why the Shogun's Kyoto Residence Matters

Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun, and it is where his line ended: in 1867 the last shogun announced the return of power to the emperor in its great hall. It is not a fortress in the Himeji sense but a palace inside moats, and the Ninomaru palace is the finest surviving example of the shoin style, with 3,600 paintings by the Kano school on gold leaf. The Kyoto 3-day itinerary places it on the central-city morning.

The corridors of the Ninomaru palace chirp underfoot. The sound comes from the nails and clamps under the boards flexing against each other, and the popular story that it was designed as an intruder alarm is disputed by the castle's own conservators, who say it is a by-product of the construction that was later valued. Either way, it is the sound everyone remembers, and the reason to walk the palace slowly. Photography is banned inside the palace; the painted rooms are seen through the open corridor sides.

Enter by the east gate, pass the Karamon gate with its carved cranes and peonies, and the Ninomaru palace comes first: a series of rooms in descending rank from the audience halls to the shogun's living quarters, the tigers on gold in the waiting rooms, the pines in the great hall. Then the Ninomaru garden, a pond garden by Kobori Enshu, and across the inner moat to the Honmaru, where the palace was moved from the imperial grounds and reopened to visitors in 2024 after an 18-year restoration. Allow ninety minutes to two hours.

Entry is around 1,300 yen for the grounds and gardens and about 1,300 yen more for the Ninomaru palace interior, which is the point of the visit; buy both. The castle opens at 8:45 and the palace at 9:00; be at the gate then, because tour groups arrive from 10:00 and the corridors are narrow. The Nijojo-mae subway stop is at the gate; from Kyoto station it is one change, about 15 minutes. English audio guides are available; a guided tour is worth it here more than at most sites because the paintings are a political language.

The castle runs a cherry blossom night illumination in late March and early April, with projection art in the grounds, when the gardens are open until about 21:00. Late November brings the maples in the Seiryu-en garden. Summer is hot in the open grounds; do the palace and skip the far garden.
