Meeting a Maiko in Kyoto: Dinners, Dances, Photo Sessions, and What Is Real

Kyoto's geiko (the Kyoto word for geisha) and maiko (apprentices, usually 15 to 20 years old) are professional entertainers trained in dance, song, shamisen and conversation, working from five hanamachi districts: Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Pontocho, Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken. There are roughly 250 in total. They are not hostesses and the ozashiki, the banquet room where they perform, is by introduction. Everything below is a way in that did not exist thirty years ago, and the Gion district guide covers the streets themselves.

Gion Corner is the entry point: a nightly 50-minute stage of kyo-mai dance, tea ceremony, koto and bunraku excerpts, with maiko on stage for the dance segment. Cheap and short. Next are group dinners, often 10 to 30 guests in a restaurant, where a maiko dances, plays a drinking game and moves between tables; these run USD 100 to 200 a head. Then the private ozashiki, arranged through a tea house or an agency, two hours with a maiko and a geiko for your group alone, kaiseki included, USD 400 to over 1,000 per group. The seasonal public dances (Miyako Odori in April, Kamogawa Odori in May, Gion Odori in November) are the best value: a full theatre production by the districts themselves, tickets USD 30 to 60.

Many visitors in Gion are tourists dressed as maiko by makeover studios, wig and white makeup included, for USD 80 to 200. The studios are open about it and the results are good. A real maiko has her own hair (not a wig, which is why the long-hair styles matter), a longer hanging obi with the house crest, and is walking with purpose at dusk to an engagement, not posing on Hanamikoji. Photo sessions with a real maiko exist through the same agencies that arrange dinners, at USD 150 to 300 for thirty minutes, and are a fair way to get the portrait without the dinner.

Since 2019 Gion's private lanes carry signs banning photography, with fines, after years of maiko being chased and touched. Photograph from the public street, never block a maiko's path, and do not ask her to stop; she is late for work. Hanamikoji at 17:45 is where you are most likely to see one crossing to an appointment. The best behaviour is the one that keeps this open to visitors at all.

Gion Corner sells at the door. Group dinners need a few days' notice; private ozashiki need one to three weeks, and more in cherry blossom and November. The public dance seasons sell out weeks ahead for good seats. If the budget is tight, do the April or November dance plus an early-evening walk on Hanamikoji, and you will have seen the real thing twice for under USD 60.
