Who they are
Kyoto's geiko (the Kyoto word for geisha) and maiko (apprentices, usually 15 to 20 years old) are professional entertainers trained in dance, song, shamisen and conversation, working from five hanamachi districts: Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Pontocho, Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken. There are roughly 250 in total. They are not hostesses and the ozashiki, the banquet room where they perform, is by introduction. Everything below is a way in that did not exist thirty years ago, and the Gion district guide covers the streets themselves.
