Kimono Rental in Kyoto: Where to Rent, What It Costs, the Best Streets to Walk In One, and the Mistakes That Ruin the Photos

Rental shops cluster below Kiyomizu-dera, around Gion and at Arashiyama. You pick a kimono from racks priced by tier, staff dress you in twenty minutes with all the layers, obi, socks and sandals, and you walk out until the return hour. Bags are stored. Hair sets and accessory upgrades are add-ons. Men's kimono and hakama are stocked at most larger shops; children's sizes at some. A next-day return option lets you keep the kimono for an evening in Gion and bring it back the following morning.

The cheap plans use polyester, which is fine in photographs and better in rain. Mid plans add hair styling and a wider choice of obi. The top plans are silk, antique or furisode (the long-sleeved formal kimono) and come with a dresser who spends longer on the fit. For a day of walking the mid plan is the right buy; for a photo session in Gion the top plan shows. Expect USD 20 to 40, USD 40 to 60 and USD 60 to 120 for the three tiers.

Higashiyama's stone lanes, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, climbing to Kiyomizu-dera; the Yasaka pagoda street; Gion's Hanamikoji and Shirakawa canal; the Philosopher's Path in cherry season; Arashiyama's bamboo grove and the Togetsukyo bridge. Short steps, toes slightly inward, and hold the sleeves when you reach for anything. Sit on the front edge of chairs so the obi knot is not crushed, and on trains stand if you can. Carry a small bag in the hand, not over the shoulder. Eat lightly; the obi is tight, and a soup or noodle lunch in a kimono is a test of nerve. Rain ponchos are provided by the shops, and the sandals are surprisingly stable on cobbles.

Dress at 9:00 and be on the Higashiyama lanes by 9:30 for empty photos; by 11:00 the same lanes are full of other people in kimono. Return by 17:30. Book two to seven days ahead for late March to early April and mid to late November; walk-ins work the rest of the year on weekdays. Pair the day with a tea ceremony, which most tea houses welcome in kimono.
