Kimono Rental in Osaka: Where to Rent, the Streets That Photograph Well, and How It Differs from Kyoto

Kyoto has the streets; Osaka has the queues without them. Rental in Osaka costs a little less, the shops are rarely sold out, and the dressing is faster because the shops are less busy. The trade is the backdrop: Osaka's photogenic kimono locations are islands (the castle park, one alley in Namba, a temple or two) rather than whole districts. Choose from racks priced by tier, be dressed in about twenty minutes with all layers, obi, tabi and sandals, store your bag, and return by late afternoon. Basic polyester plans USD 20 to 35, mid plans with hair styling USD 35 to 50, silk or furisode USD 60 to 70. Yukata, the cotton summer version, from June to September at the lower end. Osaka castle park: the Nishinomaru garden lawn with the keep behind, the moat bridges, and in early April the cherry trees. Hozenji Yokocho in Namba: the stone-paved lantern alley with the moss-covered Fudo statue, five minutes from the Dotonbori shops. Left panel over right, always. Small steps, hands together at the front, sit on the edge of chairs so the obi knot survives. Eat lightly; the obi does not stretch. In summer, yukata are cooler but still hot by 14:00, so plan the walk for the morning. Shops provide rain ponchos; sandals cope with wet paving better than they look.

Dress at 9:30 near the castle, walk the park until 11:30, subway to Namba for lunch and Hozenji alley photos at 13:00 when the light is soft under the lanterns, return the kimono by 16:30.
