West Bay: Built Almost Entirely Within One Generation
West Bay, Doha's dense cluster of skyscrapers housing international hotels, banks and corporate headquarters, was built almost entirely from the 2000s onward as part of Qatar's broader push to diversify its economy beyond oil and gas, and the speed and density of that construction is part of why the skyline reads as so uniformly modern compared to the historic Souq Waqif area a short distance south. Several of the towers carry distinctive architectural signatures — twisting forms, tapered profiles, illuminated crowns — making the skyline recognizable even from a single photo rather than reading as generic glass-and-steel.
West Bay also functions as Doha's main business and five-star hotel district, so it's as much a place to stay or do business as a sightseeing destination in its own right.
