The Museum of Islamic Art and Doha's Cultural Core
The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei (also responsible for the Louvre's glass pyramid), sits on its own purpose-built island at the southern end of the Corniche, and the building itself — a geometric, fortress-like limestone form drawing on centuries of Islamic architectural motifs — is as much the attraction as the collection inside, which spans more than a millennium of Islamic art from Spain to China. The surrounding MIA Park, a wide waterfront green space, is one of the best free spots in the city for an evening walk with the West Bay skyline as a backdrop.
A short drive or taxi away, Katara Cultural Village adds an amphitheater, galleries, and a public beach, while the Msheireb Downtown Doha redevelopment and the Fire Station arts center round out the city's cultural core for anyone wanting more than a single museum stop.
