An Entirely Man-Made Island, Built in the Shape of a Pearl Necklace
The Pearl-Qatar is a large-scale land reclamation project off Doha's West Bay Lagoon coast, built from scratch starting in the early 2000s on the site of what was historically a natural pearl-diving area — the island's overall shape, visible from above, is designed to echo a string of pearls, a direct reference to Qatar's pre-oil pearling economy. It now functions as an upscale residential and leisure district, with yacht-lined marinas, low-rise Mediterranean and Arabian-influenced architecture, and a noticeably slower, more leisurely rhythm than the glass towers of West Bay just across the water.
The island is connected to the mainland by road, making it an easy taxi or drive from central Doha rather than requiring a boat to reach.
