Das ist der Nachmittag für alle, die den Taj schon gesehen haben oder ihn aus einem anderen Blickwinkel wollen. Beide Orte liegen am anderen Ufer der Yamuna, beide ohne Gedränge, und zusammen ergeben sie einen ungewöhnlich ruhigen halben Tag.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, der Baby Taj, wurde von Nur Jahan zwischen 1622 und 1628 für ihren Vater errichtet, zwei Jahrzehnte vor dem Taj Mahal. Es ist der erste Mogulbau, der vollständig mit weißem Marmor verkleidet wurde, und der erste, der Pietra-dura-Einlegearbeit in großem Maßstab einsetzte. Praktisch alles, wofür der Taj berühmt ist, wurde hier zuerst entwickelt, in einer Größe, bei der Sie nah genug herankommen, um die Handwerkskunst richtig zu betrachten. Meist ist es fast leer.

Mehtab Bagh ist der Mondscheingarten, direkt gegenüber dem Taj angelegt und so genau ausgerichtet, dass die Kuppel vom richtigen Punkt aus mittig zwischen den Minaretten sitzt. Er wurde als Ort gedacht, von dem aus man das Grabmal über das Wasser hinweg betrachtet, und er bleibt der beste Fernblick auf das Bauwerk überhaupt. Bei Sonnenuntergang nimmt der Marmor das letzte Licht aus dem Westen auf.
