Taj Mahal Opening & Closing Time (2026): The Definitive Timing Guide

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) manages the Taj Mahal's timings based on the solar cycle. While generally advertised as 'Sunrise to Sunset,' the operational hours are standardized for 2026 to assist with crowd control and security.

Official Daily Timings:

- Opening Time: 06:00 AM (Sharp)

- Closing Time: 06:30 PM (Varies by light)

- Last Entry: Gates typically close to new visitors exactly 30 minutes before the official closing time.

Important Note: These timings are strictly enforced. If you are standing in the mausoleum when the closing whistle blows, security will begin ushering all visitors toward the exits immediately.

Agra's weather and daytime light vary significantly throughout the year, impacting the 'feel' of the monument at different times.

- Winter Months (December – February): This is peak season. The gates still open at 06:00 AM, but the sun may not rise until 06:45 AM or later. High-density morning fog is common in January, which can completely obscure the monument until 10:00 AM. If visiting in winter, check the local weather forecast for 'Visibility' metrics before choosing a sunrise slot.

One of the most frequent travel mistakes is arriving in Agra on a Friday only to find the Taj Mahal gates locked. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday to everyone.

Why the closure?

There is an active mosque within the complex (on the western side). Fridays are reserved for local residents to offer their congregational Jumma prayers.

Strategic Alternative: If your only day in Agra is a Friday, you can still view the monument from Mehtab Bagh across the river or from the rooftop of various hotels. All other major monuments like Agra Fort and the Baby Taj remain open on Fridays.
