Agra Fort war bis 1638 der Hauptsitz der Mogulherrscher, dann verlegte Shah Jahan die Hauptstadt nach Delhi und baute dort das Rote Fort. Alles, was im ersten Jahrhundert des Reiches geschah, geschah innerhalb dieser Mauern.

Was Akbar baute

Er begann es 1565 an der Stelle eines älteren Ziegelforts, in dem roten Sandstein, der zum Kennzeichen seiner Herrschaft wurde: zweieinhalb Kilometer Mauer, ein doppelter Graben und ein Eingang am Amar-Singh-Tor, abgewinkelt und verdoppelt, damit Kriegselefanten ihn nicht in gerader Linie rammen konnten.

Der Jahangiri Mahal ist das erhaltene Stück seiner Wohnbauten: geschnitzte Konsolen und Balken statt Bögen, hinduistische und zentralasiatische Formen offen verwendet, für seine Rajputen-Frauen gebaut.

Was Shah Jahan neu baute

Sein Enkel ließ viel davon abreißen und in weißem Marmor ersetzen, und das ist der Wechsel von der arbeitenden Festung zum Palast.

Der Diwan-i-Am, wo der Herrscher aus einer erhöhten Nische öffentliche Bittschriften hörte. Der Diwan-i-Khas für Privataudienzen. Der Khas Mahal mit seinen vergoldeten Pavillons. Das Badehaus Sheesh Mahal, mit tausenden Spiegelsplittern besetzt.

Musamman Burj

Der achteckige Marmorturm an der Flussmauer, und der Grund, warum dieses Fort die Menschen festhält.

1658 setzte Aurangzeb seinen Vater ab und hielt ihn hier gefangen. Shah Jahan verbrachte die letzten acht Jahre seines Lebens in diesen Räumen und sah flussabwärts auf den Taj Mahal, den er für seine Frau gebaut hatte. Er starb 1666 im Turm und wurde über das Wasser getragen, um neben ihr begraben zu werden.

Praktisch

Zwei Stunden. Täglich geöffnet, auch am Freitag, wenn der Taj geschlossen ist, was es zur richtigen Buchung für diesen Tag macht.

Der Eintritt kostet 650 ₹ für ausländische Staatsangehörige, zahlbar am Tor. Etwa ein Viertel des Forts ist offen; der Rest ist weiterhin bei der indischen Armee.

Erg interessante plek, ook zo dichtbij de Taj Mahal. De gids was erg hulpvaardig en heeft me zelfs van mijn hotel opgehaald en teruggebracht, wat oorspronkelijk niet afgesproken was. Een aanrader om hierheen te gaan!
