Ihr Guide trifft Sie und hält sie bereits in der Hand, und Sie gehen durch den Express-Einlass statt durch die Kasse. In der Saison ist das der Unterschied zwischen drei Stunden am Taj und viereinhalb, wobei die Zusatzzeit meist stehend verbracht wird.

Die Kontrolle gilt dennoch für alle: keine Stative, keine Drohnen, kein Essen, keine großen Taschen, keine Feuerzeuge. Schließfächer am Tor.

Die achteckige Kammer

Innen im Mausoleum ist der Grundriss ein achtseitiger Saal, und das ist bewusst so: die mogulische Grabarchitektur nutzte das Achteck, um zwischen dem Quadrat der Erde und dem Kreis des Himmels zu stehen. Dieselbe Form erscheint am Musamman Burj im Agra Fort und, noch vor beiden, im Grabmal von Humayun.

Um die Kenotaphe steht ein Gitter aus geschnitztem Marmor-Jali, aus einem einzigen Block gearbeitet, das ein früheres goldenes Gitter ersetzt, das Shah Jahan hatte anfertigen lassen und das Aurangzeb entfernte.

Die Kenotaphe selbst sind leer. Die echten Gräber liegen direkt darunter in der Krypta, versiegelt, genau darunter ausgerichtet und für Besucher geschlossen, eine mogulische Konvention, denn die eigentliche Bestattung soll kein Schauspiel sein.

Mumtaz Mahals Inschrift läuft um ihr Kenotaph mit ihren Titeln und dem Datum ihres Todes 1631. Die von Shah Jahan, fünfunddreißig Jahre später hinzugefügt, ist größer und sitzt außerhalb der Mittelachse, die einzige Asymmetrie in einem sonst millimetergenau gespiegelten Bau.
