Woher Indiens Parfüm wirklich kommt

Kannauj destilliert seit etwa fünfzehnhundert Jahren Attar. Die Stadt liegt in der Gangesebene, rund 250 km östlich von Agra, und ihre gesamte Wirtschaft beruht darauf, Blüten in Öl zu verwandeln, nach einer Methode, die sich seit den Mogulzeiten kaum verändert hat.

Es ist ein ungewöhnlicher Ausflug, und der einzige seiner Art auf dieser Route.

Deg-bhapka

Die Technik ist Hydrodestillation in Kupfer. Blüten kommen in einen Kupferkessel, den Deg, über einem Holzfeuer mit Wasser. Der Dampf wandert durch ein Bambusrohr zu einem Gefäß, dem Bhapka, das in einem Kühlbecken steht und schon Sandelholzöl enthält. Der Duft kondensiert direkt in das Öl statt in Wasser.

Kein Strom, keine Thermometer. Der Destillateur beurteilt die Hitze am Klang des Feuers und am Griff des Kupfers, und ein einziger Durchlauf kann Tage dauern.

Sandelholz als Basis ist der Grund, warum sich indische Attars anders verhalten als französische Parfüms: kein Alkohol, also verflüchtigt sich nichts sofort, und der Duft entwickelt sich stundenlang auf der Haut.

Was hier destilliert wird

Rose, Jasmin, Vetiver (Khus), Kewda aus Schraubenpalmenblüten, Safran, und der berühmte: Mitti-Attar, destilliert aus gebranntem Lehm, der genau nach dem ersten Regen auf trockener Erde riecht. Nirgendwo sonst auf der Welt wird er hergestellt.

Die Felder und der Markt

Je nach Jahreszeit sehen Sie die Blumenfelder bei der Ernte im Morgengrauen und den Großhandelsmarkt, auf dem die Tagesernte gewogen und verkauft wird. Rose ist Frühling, Jasmin ist Sommer, Kewda ist Monsun.

Ihre eigene Mischung

Sie arbeiten mit einem Handwerker zusammen, um einen eigenen Attar zu kreieren, und nehmen ihn in einem kleinen Glasfläschchen mit nach Hause.

Praktisch

Ein langer Tag, rund zehn Stunden einschließlich der Fahrt in jede Richtung, im privaten klimatisierten Wagen. Das Mittagessen ist lokal und inbegriffen.

Die Destillerien sind heiß, rauchig und völlig untouristisch. Das macht den Reiz aus; erwarten Sie kein Besucherzentrum.
