La capital imperial, hasta que dejó de serlo

El Fuerte de Agra fue la sede principal de los emperadores mogoles hasta 1638, cuando Shah Jahan trasladó la capital a Delhi y construyó allí el Fuerte Rojo. Todo lo que ocurrió en el primer siglo del imperio ocurrió dentro de estas murallas.

Lo que construyó Akbar

Lo empezó en 1565 sobre un fuerte de ladrillo anterior, con esa arenisca roja que se volvió la firma de su reinado: dos kilómetros y medio de muralla, un foso doble y una entrada por la Puerta de Amar Singh, en ángulo y doblada para que los elefantes de guerra no pudieran embestirla en línea recta.

El Jahangiri Mahal es la parte que sobrevive de sus edificios residenciales: ménsulas y vigas labradas en lugar de arcos, formas hindúes y centroasiáticas usadas sin disimulo, construido para sus esposas rajputs.

Lo que reconstruyó Shah Jahan

Su nieto derribó buena parte y la reemplazó en mármol blanco, y ahí está el paso de fortaleza en funcionamiento a palacio.

El Diwan-i-Am, donde el emperador escuchaba las peticiones públicas desde una hornacina elevada. El Diwan-i-Khas para las audiencias privadas. El Khas Mahal con sus pabellones dorados. La casa de baños Sheesh Mahal, incrustada con miles de fragmentos de espejo.

Musamman Burj

La torre octogonal de mármol en la muralla del río, y la razón por la que este fuerte se le queda a uno dentro.

En 1658 Aurangzeb depuso a su padre y lo encerró aquí. Shah Jahan pasó los últimos ocho años de su vida en estas habitaciones, mirando río abajo hacia el Taj Mahal que había construido para su esposa. Murió en la torre en 1666 y lo llevaron al otro lado del agua para enterrarlo junto a ella.

La entrada cuesta 650 ₹ para extranjeros, se paga en la puerta. Está abierta más o menos una cuarta parte del fuerte; el resto sigue en manos del ejército indio.

Erg interessante plek, ook zo dichtbij de Taj Mahal. De gids was erg hulpvaardig en heeft me zelfs van mijn hotel opgehaald en teruggebracht, wat oorspronkelijk niet afgesproken was. Een aanrader om hierheen te gaan!
