La media jornada que funciona cuando el Taj está cerrado.

Dos lugares mogoles, ninguno de ellos el famoso, y los dos merecen de verdad el tiempo. Es el itinerario evidente para un viernes en Agra, y un buen segundo día para quien ya ha hecho el Taj.

El fuerte de Agra fue sede del poder mogol durante más tiempo del que el Taj lleva existiendo. Akbar lo construyó en arenisca roja a partir de 1565 y Shah Jahan rehízo buena parte del interior en mármol. Verás la puerta de Amar Singh, acodada e inclinada precisamente para frenar una carga de elefantes, el Diwan-i-Am donde el emperador escuchaba las peticiones públicas, el palacio de Jahangir, y el Musamman Burj, la torre octogonal de mármol donde Shah Jahan pasó sus últimos ocho años preso de su hijo Aurangzeb, mirando al otro lado del Yamuna hacia la tumba de su esposa.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, el Baby Taj, está en la otra orilla. Nur Jahan lo mandó construir para su padre entre 1622 y 1628, y es el primer edificio mogol revestido por completo de mármol blanco y el primero en usar la incrustación de pietra dura a gran escala. El Taj tomó prestadas ambas ideas. Es pequeño, con sombra y casi siempre vacío, lo que hace mucho más fácil mirar de verdad la artesanía.
