El oficio que dejó el Taj

El comercio de marquetería en mármol de Agra existe gracias al Taj Mahal. La técnica de la pietra dura, que consiste en cortar piedra semipreciosa y encajarla a ras en el mármol, se trajo aquí para esa obra, y las familias que la practican hoy remontan el oficio a los artesanos que trabajaron en ella.

La visita al taller es la razón para reservar esta y no una visita de compras cualquiera.

El taller

Verá el proceso real: un dibujo trazado sobre el mármol, la cavidad abierta a cincel a mano, la piedra rebajada a su forma en una rueda, y las piezas asentadas con tal precisión que no se nota la junta con la punta del dedo.

Un tablero del tamaño de un plato puede llevarle semanas a un hombre. Después de ver eso, las superficies de marquetería del Taj asombran de otra manera.

Cómo distinguir lo auténtico de lo falso: la marquetería auténtica es mármol, fría al tacto, opaca y pesada. La versión barata es alabastro o esteatita, más tibia, más ligera y translúcida si se le pone una luz detrás. Cualquier guía que valga su tarifa le enseñará esta prueba, y la suya lo hará.
