Todo el mundo habla del amanecer en el Taj. El atardecer recibe menos atención y es, para mucha gente, la mejor visita: no hay que levantarse a las cinco, el mármol toma un ámbar cálido en lugar de un blanco frío, y la gente se va aclarando sin pausa hacia el cierre en vez de ir a más.

La recogida es a media tarde en su hotel o en la estación de tren.

Mehtab Bagh primero, si da tiempo

El jardín mogol justo enfrente, al otro lado del Yamuna, trazado exactamente sobre el eje del Taj. De aquí salen las fotos del reflejo, y es el único sitio donde se puede fotografiar el edificio con agua y sin gente en el encuadre.

Luego el monumento

La entrada sin colas le pone en el carril más corto en la puerta. El control de seguridad se aplica igualmente a todos, y la lista de lo que no puede entrar es estricta: sin trípodes, sin drones, sin comida, sin bolsas grandes.

Dentro, su guía cubre lo que justifica la fama en lugar de recitar fechas: la caligrafía dimensionada para leerse a una altura uniforme desde el suelo; las incrustaciones de pietra dura, donde una sola flor lleva decenas de piedras; los alminares inclinados hacia fuera para que un terremoto los alejara de la tumba; la ilusión óptica de la puerta Darwaza-i-Rauza, donde el Taj parece encogerse a medida que uno se acerca.

Y la única asimetría en un edificio obsesionado con la simetría: el cenotafio de Shah Jahan, colocado junto al de su esposa por Aurangzeb, fuera del eje central.

Cuando se va la luz

La última media hora antes del cierre es la razón de estar aquí. El mármol es lo bastante translúcido para retener el color después de que el sol lo deje, y la cúpula pasa del oro al rosa y al gris.

Práctico

Cierra los viernes. La última entrada es antes del atardecer, no a esa hora, y se mueve a lo largo del año: la visita se programa según la fecha. La entrada para extranjeros es de 1,100 ₹, más 200 ₹ por la cámara del mausoleo.
