Aquí el amanecer no es un eslogan de marketing

El Taj abre media hora antes del amanecer, y los primeros noventa minutos son de verdad distintos del resto del día. El mármol se lee gris, luego rosa, luego blanco frío a medida que el sol supera la orilla opuesta. La gente es una fracción de la que habrá a las diez, y en invierno sube niebla del Yamuna detrás de la cúpula.

Eso significa una recogida en la oscuridad. Todo el que lo hace dice que mereció la pena.

En el Taj

Shah Jahan lo mandó construir desde 1632 para Mumtaz Mahal, que murió dando a luz a su decimocuarto hijo. Veintidós años, veinte mil obreros, y mármol blanco acarreado 400 km desde Makrana.

Su guía le mostrará lo que se escapa con facilidad: la caligrafía coránica labrada en letras cada vez más grandes para que se lea a la misma altura desde abajo; las flores de pietra dura con decenas de piedras incrustadas cada una; los alminares, inclinados mínimamente hacia fuera para que cayeran lejos de la tumba en un terremoto; y la ruptura de la simetría, el cenotafio de Shah Jahan, añadido más tarde por Aurangzeb, el único objeto del edificio que está descentrado.

El Fuerte de Agra

Luego el fuerte, dos kilómetros río arriba: la fortaleza de arenisca roja de Akbar, de 1565, con los palacios de mármol de Shah Jahan dentro. El Musamman Burj, donde Aurangzeb tuvo preso a su padre los últimos ocho años de su vida, mira directamente río abajo hacia el Taj.
