Los encuadres

El banco de Diana en el eje central, por el que todos hacen cola y que merece la espera. El reflejo en el canal largo de agua. Siluetas contra el sol. Las fotos de perspectiva forzada, sosteniendo, pellizcando, equilibrando la cúpula, más divertidas de hacer que de leer. Y encuadres a través de los arcos de arenisca roja de la puerta Darwaza-i-Rauza, donde la piedra cálida realza el mármol.

La parte del guía

Shah Jahan empezó el Taj en 1632, el año siguiente a la muerte de Mumtaz Mahal al dar a luz a su decimocuarto hijo. Veinte mil obreros, veintidós años, mármol acarreado 400 km desde Makrana.

Los detalles que de otro modo pasarían de largo: la caligrafía labrada en letras cada vez más grandes para que se lea a la misma altura desde el suelo; las incrustaciones de pietra dura, hasta sesenta piedras en una flor; los cuatro alminares, inclinados mínimamente hacia fuera para que un terremoto los dejara caer lejos de la tumba; y la única asimetría en un edificio por lo demás perfectamente simétrico, el cenotafio de Shah Jahan, colocado fuera de eje por Aurangzeb.
