El mehndi no es una actividad turística en India, es una artesanía doméstica ligada a bodas, festivales y al Eid, y las artistas que lo hacen bien llevan haciéndolo desde la infancia. Esto es una hora con una de ellas en Agra.
Qué pasa
Eliges un estilo y un sitio, manos o pies, sencillo o denso. La artista trabaja a mano alzada con el cono, y por eso merece la pena buscar a las buenas: no hay plantilla ni forma de corregir. Los diseños árabes son más rotundos y abiertos, los indios más finos y rellenos, y el trabajo rajastaní queda entre medias. Tu artista te enseñará opciones y te explicará qué encaja con el espacio.
La pasta tarda unos veinte minutos en aplicarse para una mano y después necesita un par de horas para secar y fijarse. El tono se intensifica durante el día o los dos días siguientes, así que se ve mejor el segundo día que el mismo día.

Conviene saber
La pasta es henna natural, que tiñe de marrón anaranjado y se oscurece hasta un marrón rojizo intenso. La henna negra con PPD provoca quemaduras químicas y cicatrices; aquí no se usa y deberías rechazarla en cualquier sitio donde te la ofrezcan.
El diseño dura entre una y dos semanas y se va desvaneciendo. No se puede quitar antes.
Deja la pasta el mayor tiempo que aguantes, idealmente entre dos y seis horas. No la laves: ráspala cuando esté seca.
Evita el agua en la zona durante las primeras doce horas o el color no acabará de desarrollarse.
Reserva esto después de tu visita al Taj, no antes. La henna húmeda y un monumento lleno de mármol blanco no combinan.
