El Chambal tiene una historia rara: durante siglos los barrancos a lo largo de su curso fueron territorio de bandidos, lo que impidió que se construyeran fábricas o pueblos en sus orillas. El resultado es que mientras el Yamuna en Agra es uno de los ríos más contaminados de la India, el Chambal, a una hora de distancia, es uno de los más limpios, y alberga fauna que ha desaparecido casi en todas partes.

El safari

Un recorrido en barco de dos a tres horas con un naturalista de habla inglesa, en una embarcación de fondo plano que avanza despacio y en silencio.

Los gaviales son la razón por la que viene la mayoría de la gente, el cocodrilo piscívoro con el hocico largo y estrecho y el bulto en la punta. Quedan en libertad unos 650 adultos reproductores, y aproximadamente tres cuartas partes viven en este santuario. Los verá varados en los bancos de arena en cantidad.

Los cocodrilos de marisma comparten el agua y son los más peligrosos de los dos, aunque no para un barco.

Los delfines del Ganges también están aquí, ciegos, de agua dulce, con ecolocalización, y el animal acuático nacional de la India. Los avistamientos son reales pero no garantizados; salen a la superficie brevemente y hace falta paciencia.

Las aves son la mitad infravalorada del viaje: el pico tijera indio, que corta la superficie con la mitad inferior del pico, los gansos de cabeza listada en invierno, las grullas sarus, los charranes de vientre negro, y la tortuga de tejado de corona roja tomando el sol en cada tronco.

Práctico

Unas siete horas de puerta a puerta con 80 km de trayecto en cada sentido en un coche privado con aire acondicionado. La comida está incluida.

La temporada importa. De noviembre a marzo es la ventana adecuada: el agua está baja y clara, los bancos de arena quedan al descubierto, y las aves migratorias están presentes. Los meses del monzón son malos y el recorrido puede ser impracticable.

Lleve prismáticos si tiene, sombrero y protección solar; no hay sombra sobre el agua.

Die Flusssafari war aussergewoehnlich schoen. Der Tourguide kannte alle Vogelarten, und ich sah Krokodile, Schildkroeten, seltene Voegel und badente Kuehe und Ochsen. Jeder, der in der Naehe sich befindet, sollte diese Tour machen. Der Tourguide und der Fahrer waren sehr professionnel. Der Lunch in der Chambal Wildlife Safari Lodge war ausgezeichnet gut, und insgesamt verbrachte ich einen unvergesslichen Tag. Vielen Dank an den Tourguide und den Fahrer, aber auch das gute Essen in der Chambal Wildlife Safari Lodge, fuer den Tag, an den ich mich immer erinnern werde.
