Akbar construyó Fatehpur Sikri en la década de 1570 como su nueva capital, en arenisca roja y a un coste enorme. La abandonó en unos quince años, muy probablemente porque falló el suministro de agua. Lo que queda es una ciudad mogola completa, insólitamente intacta porque nadie construyó nunca encima, y notablemente tranquila en comparación con cualquier cosa de la propia Agra.

Qué ves

El Buland Darwaza es la entrada, de 54 metros de altura, levantado para conmemorar la campaña de Akbar en Gujarat y todavía la puerta más alta de India. Dentro está el dargah de mármol de Salim Chishti, el santo sufí que predijo el hijo de Akbar, donde las mujeres siguen atando hilos a las celosías caladas y pidiendo un deseo. El Panch Mahal se retranquea a lo largo de cinco plantas abiertas, como una pila de pabellones. El Diwan-i-Khas tiene un único pilar central tallado con una plataforma encima, donde se dice que Akbar se sentaba mientras sus consejeros debatían desde las esquinas, y el palacio de Jodha Bai muestra el diseño hindú e islámico funcionando juntos, algo que definió su corte.
