Le fort d'Agra fut la résidence principale des empereurs moghols jusqu'en 1638, quand Shah Jahan déplaça la capitale à Delhi et y fit bâtir le Fort Rouge. Tout ce qui s'est joué dans le premier siècle de l'empire s'est joué à l'intérieur de ces murs.

Deux heures avec un guide agréé, ce qui est la bonne durée pour un seul édifice vu correctement.

Ce qu'Akbar a bâti

Il l'a commencé en 1565, à la place d'un fort de brique plus ancien, dans le grès rouge devenu la signature de son règne : deux kilomètres et demi de muraille, un double fossé, et une entrée à la porte Amar Singh, coudée et dédoublée pour que les éléphants de guerre ne puissent pas la charger en ligne droite.

Le Jahangiri Mahal est la partie survivante de son travail résidentiel : des consoles et des poutres sculptées plutôt que des arcs, des formes hindoues et d'Asie centrale employées ouvertement, bâti pour ses épouses rajputes.

Ce que Shah Jahan a reconstruit

Son petit-fils en a fait abattre une grande partie et l'a remplacée en marbre blanc, et c'est le passage de la forteresse en service au palais.

Le Diwan-i-Am, où l'empereur recevait les requêtes publiques depuis une alcôve surélevée. Le Diwan-i-Khas pour les audiences privées. Le Khas Mahal et ses pavillons dorés. Les bains du Sheesh Mahal, sertis de milliers d'éclats de miroir.

Musamman Burj

La tour octogonale de marbre sur le mur côté rivière, et la raison pour laquelle ce fort marque les gens.

En 1658, Aurangzeb a déposé son père et l'a emprisonné ici. Shah Jahan a passé les huit dernières années de sa vie dans ces pièces, à regarder en aval le Taj Mahal qu'il avait fait bâtir pour sa femme. Il est mort dans la tour en 1666 et a été porté de l'autre côté de l'eau pour être enterré auprès d'elle.

Pratique

Deux heures. Ouvert tous les jours, y compris le vendredi quand le Taj est fermé, ce qui en fait la bonne chose à réserver ce jour-là.

L'entrée est à 650 ₹ pour les ressortissants étrangers, payée à la porte. Environ un quart du fort est ouvert ; le reste est toujours occupé par l'armée indienne.

Erg interessante plek, ook zo dichtbij de Taj Mahal. De gids was erg hulpvaardig en heeft me zelfs van mijn hotel opgehaald en teruggebracht, wat oorspronkelijk niet afgesproken was. Een aanrader om hierheen te gaan!
