Le fort mérite plus que les quarante minutes qu'on lui accorde d'habitude

Le fort d'Agra est une ville fortifiée, pas un fort : deux kilomètres et demi de muraille en grès rouge, un double fossé, et à l'intérieur les palais de trois empereurs. La plupart des excursions au Taj lui laissent une heure avant le déjeuner. Trois heures, c'est la durée honnête.

Ce qu'a bâti Akbar

Il l'a commencé en 1565, à la place d'un fort de brique plus ancien, dans ce grès rouge qui est devenu la signature de son règne. La porte d'Amar Singh par laquelle on entre est coudée et dédoublée à dessein, pour que les éléphants ne puissent pas la charger en ligne droite.

Le Jahangiri Mahal est la partie subsistante de ses bâtiments d'habitation : éléments hindous et centre-asiatiques ouvertement mêlés, consoles et poutres sculptées plutôt que des arcs, construit pour ses épouses rajputes.

Ce qu'a reconstruit Shah Jahan

Son petit-fils en a fait abattre une grande partie pour la remplacer en marbre blanc, et c'est là le passage de la forteresse en service au palais.

Le Diwan-i-Am, où l'empereur entendait les requêtes publiques depuis une alcôve surélevée. Le Diwan-i-Khas pour les audiences privées. Le Khas Mahal et ses pavillons dorés, et le hammam Sheesh Mahal, dont les murs sont incrustés de milliers d'éclats de miroir.

La tour octogonale en marbre sur la muraille du fleuve, et la raison pour laquelle ce fort reste en mémoire.

En 1658, Aurangzeb déposa son père et l'enferma ici. Shah Jahan passa les huit dernières années de sa vie dans ces pièces, à regarder en aval le Taj Mahal qu'il avait fait construire pour sa femme. Il mourut dans la tour et fut porté de l'autre côté de l'eau pour être enterré auprès d'elle.
