Le fort, et les écureuils

Le nourrissage des écureuils est une petite chose, et c'est ce dont les gens se souviennent de cette visite. Les jardins du fort d'Agra sont pleins d'écureuils de palmier du Nord, ceux à rayures, trois lignes claires sur un dos gris-brun, et des générations d'entre eux ont grandi au milieu des visiteurs. Ils viennent prendre une cacahuète dans une main ouverte.

Cela prend dix minutes à la fin et les enfants ne l'oublient pas.

Le fort d'Agra

Une ville fortifiée plutôt qu'un fort. Akbar l'a commencé en 1565 en grès rouge, à la place d'une structure de brique plus ancienne : deux kilomètres et demi de muraille, un double fossé, et un quart environ de l'intérieur ouvert aux visiteurs, le reste appartenant toujours à l'armée indienne.

On entre par la porte d'Amar Singh, coudée et dédoublée à dessein pour que les éléphants de guerre ne puissent pas la charger en ligne droite.

Le Jahangiri Mahal est la partie subsistante des bâtiments d'habitation d'Akbar lui-même : consoles et poutres sculptées plutôt que des arcs, formes hindoues et centre-asiatiques assumées, construit pour ses épouses rajputes.

Puis le marbre de Shah Jahan : le Diwan-i-Am où l'empereur entendait les requêtes publiques depuis une alcôve surélevée, le Diwan-i-Khas pour les audiences privées, le Khas Mahal et ses pavillons dorés, et le hammam Sheesh Mahal incrusté de milliers d'éclats de miroir.

Musamman Burj

La tour octogonale en marbre sur la muraille du fleuve, et la raison pour laquelle ce fort reste en mémoire.

En 1658, Aurangzeb déposa son père et l'enferma ici. Shah Jahan passa les huit dernières années de sa vie dans ces pièces, à regarder en aval le Taj Mahal qu'il avait fait construire pour sa femme. Il mourut dans la tour et fut porté de l'autre côté de l'eau pour être enterré auprès d'elle.

Rashid was a fantastic tour guide, took care of us all the way from our hotel, took us with the local metro (wonderful experience) and gave a detailed and knowledgeable tour of the entire Agra fort for two hours!
