Le Taj est la raison pour laquelle on vient. Le fort d'Agra est l'endroit où son bâtisseur est mort. Le Baby Taj est l'édifice qui l'a rendu possible. Huit heures couvrent les trois correctement, ce qu'une demi-journée ne peut pas faire.

Taj Mahal

Avec entrée réservée à l'avance, pour être dans le couloir le plus court à la porte. Le contrôle de sécurité s'applique à tout le monde : pas de trépied, pas de drone, pas de nourriture, pas de grands sacs. Des casiers à l'entrée.

Shah Jahan l'a commencé en 1632, l'année suivant la mort de Mumtaz Mahal en donnant naissance à leur quatorzième enfant. Vingt mille ouvriers, vingt-deux ans, du marbre acheminé sur 400 km depuis Makrana.

Ce qu'un guide agréé ajoute : la calligraphie gravée en lettres de plus en plus grandes pour se lire d'une hauteur égale depuis le sol ; les incrustations de pietra dura, où une seule fleur peut compter soixante pierres distinctes ; les minarets légèrement inclinés vers l'extérieur pour qu'un séisme les fasse tomber loin du tombeau ; et la seule asymétrie, le cénotaphe de Shah Jahan lui-même, placé hors de l'axe central par Aurangzeb.

Le fort d'Agra

Une ville fortifiée plutôt qu'un fort : deux kilomètres et demi de muraille en grès rouge, commencés par Akbar en 1565, avec à l'intérieur les palais de marbre de Shah Jahan.

Le Diwan-i-Am où les requêtes étaient entendues, le hammam Sheesh Mahal incrusté d'éclats de miroir, et le Musamman Burj, la tour octogonale où Aurangzeb a enfermé son père huit ans, avec le Taj visible le long du fleuve. Il y est mort et a été porté de l'autre côté pour être enterré auprès de sa femme.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, le Baby Taj

Celui que les visiteurs sautent et que les guides placent le plus haut. Nur Jahan l'a fait construire entre 1622 et 1628 pour son père : le premier édifice moghol entièrement en marbre blanc, et le premier en Inde à utiliser la pietra dura.

Il est plus petit que le Taj, plus densément incrusté, et presque toujours vide.
