Le mehndi n'est pas une activité touristique en Inde, c'est un artisanat domestique lié aux mariages, aux fêtes et à l'Aïd, et les artistes qui le maîtrisent le pratiquent depuis l'enfance. Voici une heure avec l'une d'elles à Agra.
Ce qui se passe
Vous choisissez un style et un emplacement, mains ou pieds, simple ou dense. L'artiste travaille à main levée au cône, et c'est pour cela que les bonnes valent la peine d'être cherchées : il n'y a ni pochoir ni retouche possible. Les motifs arabes sont plus graphiques et aérés, les motifs indiens plus fins et plus remplis, et le travail rajasthani se situe entre les deux. Votre artiste vous montrera des options et vous expliquera ce qui convient à la surface.
La pâte s'applique en une vingtaine de minutes pour une main, puis il faut quelques heures pour qu'elle sèche et prenne. La teinte fonce au cours des jours suivants : c'est plus beau le deuxième jour que le jour même.

Bon à savoir
La pâte est du henné naturel, qui teinte en brun-orangé et fonce vers un brun rougeâtre profond. Le henné noir contenant du PPD provoque des brûlures chimiques et des cicatrices ; il n'est pas utilisé ici et vous devez le refuser partout où on vous le propose.
Le motif tient environ une à deux semaines et s'estompe progressivement. Il ne peut pas être retiré plus tôt.
Gardez la pâte aussi longtemps que possible, idéalement deux à six heures. Ne la lavez pas : grattez-la une fois sèche.
Évitez l'eau sur la zone pendant les douze premières heures, sinon la couleur ne se développera pas complètement.
Réservez cette activité après votre visite du Taj, pas avant. Henné humide et monument tout en marbre blanc ne font pas bon ménage.
