Votre guide vous retrouve en les tenant en main, et vous passez par l'entrée express plutôt que par le guichet. En haute saison, c'est la différence entre trois heures au Taj et quatre heures et demie, le supplément étant surtout passé debout à attendre.

Le contrôle de sécurité s'applique à tout le monde quoi qu'il arrive : pas de trépied, pas de drone, pas de nourriture, pas de grands sacs, pas de briquets. Casiers à la porte.

La chambre octogonale

À l'intérieur du mausolée, le plan est une salle à huit côtés, et c'est délibéré : l'architecture funéraire moghole utilisait l'octogone pour se situer entre le carré de la terre et le cercle du ciel. La même forme apparaît au Musamman Burj du fort d'Agra, et dans le tombeau de Humayun avant les deux.

Autour des cénotaphes se trouve un claustra de marbre sculpté, taillé dans un seul bloc, remplaçant un claustra antérieur en or que Shah Jahan avait fait faire et qu'Aurangzeb a retiré.

Les cénotaphes eux-mêmes sont vides. Les vraies tombes se trouvent dans la crypte directement en dessous, scellées, alignées exactement au-dessous, et fermées aux visiteurs, une convention moghole, car l'inhumation réelle n'est pas censée être un spectacle.

L'inscription de Mumtaz Mahal court autour de son cénotaphe avec ses titres et la date de sa mort en 1631. Celle de Shah Jahan, ajoutée trente-cinq ans plus tard, est plus grande et placée hors de l'axe central, la seule asymétrie d'un édifice par ailleurs symétrique au millimètre.

La calligraphie gravée en tailles croissantes pour se lire d'une hauteur égale depuis le sol. La pietra dura, jusqu'à soixante morceaux de pierre dans une seule fleur. Les quatre minarets, légèrement inclinés vers l'extérieur pour qu'un séisme les éloigne du tombeau.
