Akbar a bâti Fatehpur Sikri dans les années 1570 comme nouvelle capitale, en grès rouge, à un coût considérable. Il l'a abandonnée en une quinzaine d'années, très probablement parce que l'approvisionnement en eau a fait défaut. Ce qu'il en reste est une cité moghole complète, exceptionnellement intacte parce que personne n'a jamais bâti par-dessus, et remarquablement calme comparée à tout ce qui se trouve à Agra.

Le Buland Darwaza est l'entrée, 54 mètres de haut, élevé pour marquer la campagne d'Akbar au Gujarat et toujours la plus haute porte d'Inde. À l'intérieur se trouve le dargah de marbre de Salim Chishti, le saint soufi qui annonça la naissance du fils d'Akbar, où des femmes nouent encore des fils aux claustras ajourés en formulant un vœu. Le Panch Mahal se retire sur cinq étages ouverts, comme un empilement de pavillons. Le Diwan-i-Khas possède un unique pilier central sculpté surmonté d'une plateforme, où Akbar se serait assis pendant que ses conseillers débattaient depuis les angles, et le palais de Jodha Bai montre la cohabitation des styles hindou et islamique qui a défini sa cour.
