Two days, because one is not really enough.
The same-day Agra trip spends six hours in a car for perhaps five hours of sightseeing. Staying overnight changes the arithmetic entirely: you see the Taj twice in different light, you are not watching the clock, and the drive is split across two days instead of bracketing one.
Day one
Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi in a private air-conditioned car, then the Yamuna Expressway down to Agra. Afternoon at Agra Fort, and the Taj Mahal in the late light when the marble goes warm. Check in for the night.
Day two
Back at the Taj at sunrise, which is a genuinely different building from the one you saw the previous afternoon: fewer people, cooler air, and the colour shifting from grey through pink to white. After breakfast there is time for Itimad-ud-Daulah or Fatehpur Sikri depending on the option you choose, then the drive back to Delhi.
