Seven days, and the safari gets two attempts

The Golden Triangle with Ranthambore added and enough time that the park gets two safaris rather than one. Sightings are probability, and two drives roughly double the odds.

Day 1: Delhi

Met on arrival and transferred to your hotel, with the evening to recover.

Delhi

Jama Masjid and a cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, laid out in the 1650s with a canal down its centre. Raj Ghat, where Gandhi was cremated in 1948. Then India Gate, Humayun's Tomb — the 1560s Mughal garden tomb the Taj descends from — and Qutub Minar with its unrusted iron pillar.

Agra

The Taj Mahal, best at sunrise when the marble runs grey to pink to white with a fraction of the mid-morning crowd. Agra Fort, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years with the Taj in view along the river.

Fatehpur Sikri on the road south: Akbar's capital of 1571, abandoned after fourteen years when the water failed and standing complete because of it.

Ranthambore

1,300 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest around a tenth-century hill fort that still stands inside the reserve. Around seventy tigers live here, unusually habituated to vehicles, which is why this is the best tiger park in north India.

Safaris run early morning and mid-afternoon in open gypsies or canters, on a zone the forest department allocates. Certain regardless of tigers: sambar, chital, nilgai, langur and crocodiles at the lakes.

Jaipur

Amber Fort above Maota Lake, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the Hawa Mahal, with an evening in the bazaars.
