The tomb that made the Taj possible, and the garden it faces

These two sit on the far bank of the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, a few kilometres apart, and both are usually empty. Four hours covers them without hurrying.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

Nur Jahan built it between 1622 and 1628 for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a Persian nobleman who rose to be treasurer of the empire.

It matters architecturally out of all proportion to its size. It is the first Mughal building made entirely of white marble — everything before it was red sandstone with marble trim — and the first to use pietra dura, semi-precious stone cut and inlaid into the marble surface in floral and geometric patterns.

The Taj Mahal, begun four years after this was finished, is that idea at enormous scale. Standing here first and then going to the Taj changes how you see it.

The inlay work on the Baby Taj is denser and finer than anything on its famous descendant — cornelian, jasper, lapis, onyx and topaz set into almost every surface, with jali screens cut so thin the light comes through in patterns on the floor.

Mehtab Bagh

A Mughal garden directly across the river, aligned exactly on the Taj's axis. Shah Jahan is believed to have chosen it as a moonlight garden for viewing the tomb, and the legend that he meant to build a black marble mirror-image here has never been supported by excavation.

What it gives you is the best Taj view in Agra: the whole building reflected in the water, with no crowd in the frame. Come at the end of the day, when the marble takes colour.
