The two quiet ones, ending with the best view in Agra.
This is the afternoon for people who have already done the Taj, or who want a different angle on it. Both sites sit on the far bank of the Yamuna, both are uncrowded, and together they make an unusually calm half-day.
Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, was built by Nur Jahan for her father between 1622 and 1628, two decades before the Taj Mahal. It is the first Mughal building faced entirely in white marble, and the first to use pietra dura inlay at scale. Essentially everything the Taj is famous for was worked out here first, at a size where you can stand close enough to examine the craftsmanship properly. It is often nearly empty.
Mehtab Bagh is the moonlight garden, laid out directly opposite the Taj and aligned so precisely that the dome sits centred between the minarets when viewed from the right spot. It was designed as a place to look at the tomb from across the water, and it remains the best long view of the building anywhere. At sunset the marble takes the last of the light from the west.

Worth knowing
Both sites are open on Fridays, when the Taj itself is closed. This is one of the better things to do on that day.
