Most visitors give Agra half a day, see the Taj, and leave. These three sites are why that is a mistake, and four hours covers all of them comfortably.

Agra Fort

A walled Mughal city in red sandstone, UNESCO-listed, begun by Akbar in 1565 and rebuilt in marble by his grandson Shah Jahan. Behind the double walls are the Diwan-i-Am where the emperor heard petitions, the Sheesh Mahal bath house, and the Khas Mahal with its gilded pavilions.

The part that stays with people is the Musamman Burj, the octagonal marble tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned for eight years by his own son Aurangzeb. From its balcony you can see the Taj Mahal along the river — he built it for his wife, and he died looking at it.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

Small, and more finely worked than the Taj itself. Nur Jahan built it between 1622 and 1628 for her father, and it is the first Mughal building made entirely of white marble and the first to use pietra dura — semi-precious stone inlaid into the marble in floral patterns. Every surface is covered.

It predates the Taj by a decade and directly made it possible. It is also almost empty, always.

Mehtab Bagh

A Mughal garden on the far bank of the Yamuna, laid out so that it aligns exactly with the Taj across the water. This is where the reflection photographs come from, and it is the best place in Agra to watch the marble change colour at the end of the day.

Two options
