The half-day that works when the Taj is shut.
Two Mughal sites, neither of them the famous one, and both genuinely worth the time. This is the obvious Friday itinerary in Agra, and a good second day for anyone who has already done the Taj.
Agra Fort was the seat of Mughal power for longer than the Taj has existed. Akbar built it in red sandstone from 1565 and Shah Jahan rebuilt much of the interior in marble. You see the Amar Singh Gate, angled and sloped specifically to break an elephant charge, the Diwan-i-Am where the emperor heard public petitions, the Jahangir Palace, and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal marble tower where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, looking across the Yamuna at his wife's tomb.
Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, is on the far bank. Nur Jahan built it for her father between 1622 and 1628, and it is the first Mughal building faced entirely in white marble and the first to use pietra dura inlay at scale. The Taj borrowed both ideas. It is small, shaded, and usually nearly empty, which makes the craftsmanship easier to actually look at.
