Most Agra tours are built on a historical sequence and you take photographs when you can. This one inverts it: the route, the order and the timings are set by where the light is good and where the crowds are not, and the history comes second.
Where you go
The obvious frames, done properly: the dome framed in the Great Gate, the full reflection down the water channel, the bench, and the marble platform from below.
Then the ones that make the difference. Mehtab Bagh across the river, where the Taj sits centred between its minarets and tripods are actually permitted. The riverside terrace inside the complex, which most visitors walk past. Agra Fort, where the Musamman Burj frames the Taj through an arch at a distance. Itimad-ud-Daulah, whose inlay work photographs better up close than anything on the Taj because you can get near it. And the old city lanes and markets, which are where the photographs of Agra rather than of monuments come from.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Every other location here is open, so a Friday version still works.

Tripods are banned inside the Taj complex but allowed at Mehtab Bagh. Plan the long exposures for there.
