Agra: Mohabbat the Taj show tickets and agra transfers

The story, staged

You will have spent the day looking at a tomb. This is the story that built it, performed by around eighty actors, dancers and musicians at the Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Centre in Agra.

Ninety minutes, every evening, in a purpose-built theatre with air conditioning and reserved seating — which after a day on hot stone is its own argument.

What it covers

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal: the meeting, the marriage, the campaigns she travelled on with him, her death in 1631 while giving birth to their fourteenth child, and the twenty-two years of building that followed.

The production runs it as court dance and drama — Mughal costume, live music, a rotating set, and a full-scale replica of the Taj that assembles on stage. It is unabashedly a spectacle rather than a documentary, and it is very well done for what it is.

Language

Performed with narration in Hindi and English, so the story carries whether or not you follow the dialogue.

Why it is worth an evening

Agra empties out after sunset. The monuments close, most visitors are back at their hotels by seven, and there is not a great deal to do. This fills that gap, and it sends people back to the Taj the next morning seeing something different.

It also works very well for families — children follow it easily.

Photography is not permitted during the performance.

The theatre is cold — the air conditioning is set for a full house — so bring a layer even in summer.

Seats are allocated, and the better ones go first, so booking earlier is worth it.
