The craft the Taj left behind

Agra's marble inlay trade exists because of the Taj Mahal. The pietra dura technique — cutting semi-precious stone into shapes and setting it flush into marble — was brought here for that building, and the families who do it today trace the skill back to the craftsmen who worked on it.

The workshop visit is the reason to book this rather than a generic shopping tour.

The workshop

You watch the actual process: a design traced onto marble, the cavity chiselled out by hand, stone ground to shape on a wheel, and the pieces set with adhesive so precisely that you cannot feel the join with a fingertip.

A tabletop the size of a dinner plate can take one man weeks. Once you have seen that, the acres of inlay on the Taj become a different kind of astonishing.

How to tell real from fake: real inlay is marble and is cool to the touch, opaque, and heavy. The cheap version is alabaster or soapstone — warmer, lighter, and translucent when you hold a torch behind it. Every guide worth the fee will show you this test, and yours will.
