Agra: Skip-the-Line Fast Track Entry Ticket to the Taj Mahal

What the fast track actually saves you

The Taj has separate ticket windows and separate entry lanes, and the queue at the main counter on a winter morning can run forty-five minutes before you reach security. A pre-booked ticket puts you in the shorter lane. It does not skip the security check, and nothing does — bags, frisking, and a hard list of what cannot come in.

That list matters more than people expect: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no cigarettes or lighters. Phones and small cameras are fine. There are lockers at the gate for the rest.

Inside

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

What a guide gives you here is the detail you would walk past: the calligraphy on the great arch, sized so that the letters appear the same height from the ground however high they sit; the pietra dura inlay, some flowers holding sixty separate stones; the four minarets, tilted very slightly outward so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb; and the optical trick at the gateway, where the building appears to shrink as you walk toward it.

The mausoleum chamber costs a small supplement on the ticket and holds the false tombs; the real ones are sealed in the crypt below.

Practical

The Taj is closed every Friday for prayers. It opens at sunrise and the first hour is the best of the day — cooler, emptier, and the marble goes from grey to pink to white as the sun comes up.

Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 for the mausoleum.
