The three that matter, in one day

The Taj is the reason people come. Agra Fort is where its builder died. The Baby Taj is the building that made it possible. Eight hours covers all three properly, which a half-day cannot.

Taj Mahal

With pre-booked entry, so you are in the shorter lane at the gate. Security applies to everyone: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags. Lockers at the entrance.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana.

What a licensed guide adds: the calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where one flower can hold sixty separate stones; the minarets leaning fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

A walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone wall, begun by Akbar in 1565, with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside.

The Diwan-i-Am where petitions were heard, the Sheesh Mahal bath house set with mirror fragments, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years, with the Taj visible along the river. He died there and was carried across to be buried beside his wife.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

The one visitors skip and guides rate highest. Nur Jahan built it between 1622 and 1628 for her father: the first Mughal building made entirely of white marble, and the first anywhere in India to use pietra dura.

It is smaller than the Taj, more densely inlaid, and almost always empty.

Three options

Guide only; private car, driver and guide; or the same with lunch and all entrance fees — ₹1,300 at the Taj for foreign nationals with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort, ₹310 at the Baby Taj.

The Taj is closed on Fridays; the other two are open, and the day can be reordered.
