The Taj at speed, done properly

Express entry puts you into the shorter lane rather than the ticket counter, which in season saves the better part of an hour. Security still screens everyone: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and marble hauled 400 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

What a guide gets you through in an hour that would otherwise take you three: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in progressively larger letters so it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where one flower can hold sixty separate stones; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb; the illusion at the gateway, where the building appears to shrink as you approach.

And the single asymmetry in a composition otherwise mirrored to the millimetre: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by his son.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565, with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside and the Musamman Burj — the tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years, the Taj in view along the river.

Seeing the fort straight after the Taj is the right order, because the view from that tower is the point of both.
