Both monuments in four hours, tickets already bought.
Starting in Agra rather than Delhi means the hours go to the buildings instead of the expressway. Four hours is brisk but not rushed for these two, and the entry tickets are bundled so nothing is settled at either gate.
Taj Mahal
Your guide takes you through the Great Gate approach, where the dome appears framed in the arch. The charbagh gardens and the reflecting pool. The marble platform and the mausoleum interior with its cenotaphs and carved jali screens. The pietra dura inlay, where the semi-precious stones came from, and the deliberate asymmetry of Shah Jahan's cenotaph.
Agra Fort
Ten minutes away. Red sandstone walls with marble palaces inside them — the Diwan-i-Am where the emperor heard public petitions, the Jahangir Palace, and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years imprisoned by his son with the Taj visible across the river.
Do the Taj first and the Fort second. The view from the Burj means considerably more once you have stood inside the building it looks at.
