What the mud-pack treatment is about
If you find part of the marble under sheeting, that is a multani mitti pack — a clay poultice applied to the surface, left to dry, and peeled off, drawing out the discolouration with it. It is the same fuller's earth Indian households have used on skin for centuries, and it is the only cleaning method the Archaeological Survey permits on the Taj.
It is needed because the marble yellows. Sulphur dioxide and particulates from traffic and industry react with the calcite, and in 1996 the Supreme Court ordered hundreds of foundries around Agra closed or converted to gas over it. The vehicle exclusion zone you walk through to reach the gate is part of the same judgment.
None of this spoils the visit. It explains the restrictions.
The tour
Pickup from your hotel, the railway station or the airport in Agra. Skip-the-line entry, so you go to the lane and not the counter.
Shah Jahan began the Taj in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble hauled 400 km from Makrana.
Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay of up to sixty stones in one flower; the four minarets, leaning fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the one deliberate asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added off-axis by his son.
Three options

Practical
Four hours. The Taj is closed on Fridays.
Entry is ₹1,100 for foreign nationals plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber.
The last stretch to the gate is on foot or by electric vehicle — private cars stop outside the exclusion zone, and that applies to everyone.

He made us feel at ease and helped us not only understand the history but also the daily life of modern people in the region. The driver and food were excellent as well. I do think that advertising the fact that folks with be taken to handicraft shops should be included with an option to skip these if desired. We were picked up at 5:45 at our hotel. Our guide Imran explained a lot about the Taj Mahal itself, the Agra Fort and about the Baby Taj. He also took plenty of very nice photos of us so we can remember the day and also seeing the magic Taj Mahal. Further, the guide as well as the driver were flexible to go back the hotel to change clothes, go to a coffee shop etc. We would therefore highly recommend taking the tour with Imran! Absolutely fantastic would highly recommend! Our tour guide Muhammad Taria was brilliant so informative and was so good taking photos of us it was unreal!! Our driver Deshraj was super welcoming came straight to our accommodation, was super friendly and a safe driver. Would recommend these two 10/10 experience.

Moon was our guide who was punctual , patient, very knowledgeable and we had an amazing tour , we may have known the effort that went into the detailing of the fine art and type of stones that went into building of Taj Mahal , also helped clear some of the myths my children heard about it . We would certainly choose him if we were to come back to visit Agra .
