Agra: Skip-the-Line Taj Mahal Guided Tour with Multi Options

Six options, because people arrive here in six different ways

Read them before booking. Some start in Agra, some in Delhi; some include the entrance ticket, some only the guide. The right one depends entirely on what you have already arranged.

The guide-only rate is the useful one if you have a car and driver for your India trip and simply need someone licensed at the gate.

Skip the line

On the ticketed options, entry is pre-arranged and you go to the lane rather than the counter — which in season saves the better part of an hour.

Security applies to everyone: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no lighters. Lockers at the gate.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, and white marble carted 400 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

What the guide is for: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in progressively larger letters so that from the ground every line reads the same height, and signed — unusually — by the calligrapher Amanat Khan; the pietra dura inlay, where a single flower can hold sixty pieces of cornelian, jasper, lapis and jade; the four minarets, each tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the optical trick at the gateway, where the building appears to shrink as you approach it.

And the one deliberate asymmetry in a composition mirrored to the millimetre: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

On the fuller options: Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj, where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years with the Taj in view along the river.

Practical

Closed every Friday. Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,100 plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber; Agra Fort is ₹650.
