The other good hour

Everybody talks about sunrise at the Taj. Sunset gets less attention and is, for a lot of people, the better visit: you are not getting up at five, the marble takes on a warm amber rather than cold white, and the crowd thins steadily toward closing instead of building.

Pickup is mid-afternoon from your hotel or the railway station.

Mehtab Bagh first, if time allows

The Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna, laid out on the exact axis of the Taj. This is where the reflection shots come from, and it is the only place you can photograph the building with water and no crowd in the frame.

Then the monument

Skip-the-line entry puts you in the shorter lane at the gate — security still applies to everyone, and the list of what cannot come in is strict: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags.

Inside, your guide covers what makes it worth the hype rather than reciting dates: the calligraphy sized to read evenly from the ground; the pietra dura inlay where single flowers carry dozens of stones; the minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb; the optical illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the Taj seems to shrink as you approach.

And the one asymmetry in a building obsessed with symmetry — Shah Jahan's cenotaph, placed beside his wife's by Aurangzeb, off the central axis.

As the light goes

The last half hour before closing is the reason to be here. The marble is translucent enough that it holds colour after the sun is off it, and the dome goes from gold to rose to grey.

Practical

Closed Fridays. Last entry is before sunset, not at it, and it moves through the year — the tour is timed against the date. Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber.
