Three monuments, one afternoon, no rushing.
Starting in Agra rather than Delhi means the whole day belongs to the sightseeing instead of the expressway. Six hours is comfortable for these three, with time to sit down at each rather than photographing and moving on.
The route
Taj Mahal. The gate approach, the gardens, the platform and the interior, with your guide covering the inlay, the calligraphy and the story behind the commission.
Agra Fort. A working fortress rather than a monument, with marble palaces built inside red sandstone walls. The Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan was confined by Aurangzeb, faces the Taj across the river bend.
Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj. Nur Jahan built it for her father in the 1620s, and nearly every technique the Taj is celebrated for, marble facing, pietra dura inlay, jali screens, was worked out here first. It is a fraction of the size, which means you can stand close enough to see the craftsmanship properly, and there is rarely a crowd.
