The mosque, and the building that mirrors it

Stand facing the Taj and there is a red sandstone mosque on your left and an identical building on your right. The one on the right is the jawab — the answer — and it is not a mosque. It has no mihrab and it faces the wrong way.

It exists purely so that the composition is symmetrical. That is the clearest statement of what the Taj actually is: a building where the arrangement mattered as much as the function, to the point of constructing a full-size decoy.

A guide is the difference between noticing that and walking past it.

Skip the line

Tickets are pre-booked and delivered to your phone, so you go straight to the entry lane rather than the counter. Security still screens everyone — no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags — and there are lockers at the gate.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632 after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and marble hauled 400 km from Makrana.

The calligraphy on the great arch is cut in progressively larger letters so that from the ground every line reads the same height — the calligrapher, Amanat Khan, is the only craftsman who signed his work anywhere on the building. The pietra dura puts up to sixty stones in a single inlaid flower. The four minarets lean very slightly outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone stronghold of 1565 with his grandson's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj, the tower where that grandson spent his last eight years as a prisoner of his own son.

The Taj is closed on Fridays; the fort is open daily.
