A lot of Taj tours stop at the platform. This one goes in — the tomb chamber with the cenotaphs and the carved marble screens, which is where the craftsmanship is closest and where the building stops being a silhouette and becomes a room.
What the visit covers
The Great Gate and the framed first view. The charbagh gardens divided by water channels, laid out as a representation of paradise. The marble platform, the four minarets with their deliberate outward lean, and the mausoleum interior.
Inside, the jali screens around the cenotaphs are cut from single blocks of marble — a lattice fine enough to see through, carved rather than assembled. The inlay on the cenotaphs themselves is the densest in the building.
Your guide covers the construction, the materials and where they came from, and the deliberate asymmetry of Shah Jahan's own cenotaph beside his wife's — the single break in a building that is otherwise perfectly balanced.
