The useful thing here is the range. If you are in Agra, there is a short guided version. If you are coming from Delhi or Jaipur, there are options that include the drive. And the mausoleum — the part that costs extra and that people regret skipping — is covered on several of them.
What the mausoleum adds
Standard Taj entry is ₹1,100 for foreign nationals. The extra ₹200 is what lets you onto the marble platform and inside the tomb chamber, where the jali screens around the cenotaphs are cut from single blocks of marble — a lattice fine enough to see through, carved rather than assembled — and where the inlay work is at its densest.
Without it you see the building from the gardens. With it you see what it was built to be.
The visit
The Great Gate and the framed first view. The charbagh gardens and the reflecting pool. The marble platform, the minarets with their deliberate outward lean, and the interior. Your guide covers the construction, the materials and which of the famous stories hold up.
