The echo under the dome

Stand in the central chamber and listen. The dome above the cenotaphs is a double shell, and the space between the inner and outer domes gives the chamber a reverberation that runs for something close to half a minute — a single note held and released will hang there long after the person has stopped singing.

Mughal accounts describe verses being recited in that chamber for exactly that reason. Guards will hush you now, so you will hear it from someone else's cough rather than your own voice, but it is the one thing about the Taj you experience with your ears.

Taj Mahal

Picked up from wherever you are staying in Agra, with pre-booked entry so you go to the lane rather than the counter.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble hauled 400 km from Makrana.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower, the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb, and the single asymmetry in the whole composition.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for the last eight years of his life, the Taj visible along the river.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

Across the Yamuna: Nur Jahan's tomb for her father, 1622–28. The first entirely marble Mughal building and the first in India to use pietra dura — smaller than the Taj, more densely inlaid, and almost always empty.
