Full description
Three hours, which is the right length for one monument
Picked up from your hotel, the railway station or a café in Agra; fast-track ticket; guided walk through the complex; dropped back. Nothing padded.
That is enough time to see the Taj properly and not so much that you are standing in the sun waiting for a schedule to catch up.
What the pietra dura actually is
The flowers on the marble are not painted and they are not carved reliefs. Each petal is a separate piece of stone — cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, jade, turquoise, mother-of-pearl — ground to shape and set flush into a cavity chiselled out of the marble, so precisely that you cannot feel the join with a fingertip.
Some single flowers on the cenotaph screen contain sixty pieces. Forty-three varieties of stone were brought in from as far as Tibet, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
The technique arrived from Florence and was taken up by Agra's craftsmen, whose descendants still do it — there are workshops in the city today using the same tools, and that is how you learn to tell real marble inlay from the alabaster copies sold to tourists.
The rest of what your guide covers
The calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so that from the ground every line reads the same height. The four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb. The illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the building appears to shrink as you approach.
And the one asymmetry: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by his son, in a building otherwise mirrored to the millimetre.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entry is ₹1,100 for foreign nationals plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber.
